Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception

Il Santuario dell’Immacolata Concezione si trova a Terricciola sulla strada per Chianni in località Castelvecchio, antico castello di guardia sulla strada che da Terricciola porta a Chianni. Ad oggi il santuario risulta molto più grande del suo aspetto iniziale poichè è stato soggetto ad un rifacimento nel ‘700 che ne ha modificato l’aspetto. L’esterno è caratterizzato da un elegante porticato, in parte manomesso da incauti restauri; sull’architrave del portale è possibile ammirare l’antico stemma di Terricciola. L’interno, ad unica navata con copertura a botte, colpisce per la ricercatezza delle decorazioni musive, eseguite dopo che l’edificio era stato restaurato nel 1850, in seguito ai danni del sisma del 1846. Gli affreschi della cupola, realizzati nel 1875, raffigurano l’Immacolata Concezione, mentre lungo le pareti, intervallate dalle colonne in finto marmo, si ripete lo stemma di Pisa. Da notare il ricco altare in marmi policromi.

The Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception is located in Terricciola on the road to Chianni in the locality of Castelvecchio, an ancient guard castle on the road that leads from Terricciola to Chianni. To date, the sanctuary is much larger than its initial appearance as it was subject to a renovation in the 1700s which changed its appearance. The exterior is characterized by an elegant portico, partly tampered with by careless restorations; on the architrave of the portal it is possible to admire the ancient coat of arms of Terricciola. The interior, with a single nave with a barrel roof, is striking for the refinement of the mosaic decorations, performed after the building was restored in 1850, following the damage of the 1846 earthquake. The frescoes in the dome, made in 1875, they depict the Immaculate Conception, while along the walls, interspersed with columns in imitation marble, the coat of arms of Pisa is repeated. Note the rich altar in polychrome marble.
