Prehistoric Park of Peccioli

La struttura, che presenta ricostruzioni di dinosauri, venne fondata da un artista del circo, Erardo Ghironi, il quale decise non più giovanissimo, di ritirarsi dalla vita di tournée. Il luogo prescelto per ‘fermarsi’ fu la cittadina di Peccioli dove, con il consiglio di alcuni parenti, Erardo comprò due ettari di vigneto e vi costruì una casa, per sé e per i due figli. Col desiderio di cercare un lavoro che potesse ripagare le attività dello spettacolo itinerante, Erardo e i figli si accorsero che quella loro terra era piena di conchiglie, di strane impronte, di resti fossili: i segni concreti di un’evoluzione della natura dalla preistoria ad oggi che proprio lì, anche sulla loro vigna, aveva lasciato tracce così evidenti.
Da quel ritrovamento venne l’idea di mostrare quei piccoli tesori del passato, e di corredarli con un itinerario di ricostruzioni che fosse sia scientificamente pertinente ed efficace per la didattica, sia caratterizzato dallo stile evocativo, spettacolare e volto all’intrattenimento che è cifra distintiva dell’attività circense.
I due fratelli, Guido e Paolo Ghironi, decisero di investire su questa intuizione e nel giro di pochi mesi avevano già costruito i primi cinque animali preistorici. Era il 1976: nasceva il Parco Preistorico di Peccioli, tredici anni prima del libro Jurassic Park di Crichton e sedici prima dell’omonimo film di Spielberg.
Negli anni, i due fratelli hanno affinato la loro tecnica per la costruzione dei modelli e oggi il Parco conta ventidue ricostruzioni, compreso un simpatico vulcano che erutta palline colorate e la riproduzione in scala naturale di un brachiosauro del giurassico superiore, il dinosauro più grande attualmente ricostruito in Europa. Dopo più di due anni di chiusura, dall’estate del 2018, il Parco Preistorico riapre i suoi cancelli nella primavera del 2019, rinnovato nello stile e nei servizi.

Il Parco è composto da circa tre ettari di verde con 22 riproduzioni di dinosauri a grandezza naturale. Per la precisione:

Un rettile dell’era Paleozoica – vissuto circa 40 mln di anni prima della comparsa dei dinosauri; Diciotto rettili dell’era Mesozoica – comunemente chiamati “dinosauri”;
Tre mammiferi dell’era Cenozoica, tra i quali un Homo Erectus, dei periodi Pliocene e Pleistocene, da 5 milioni di anni fa a 11 mila.

Una parte del percorso è attrezzata per gli ospiti con mobilità ridotta o per le carrozzine.

La proposta di intrattenimento del Parco Preistorico è completata da un’area dedicata ai giochi: dai baby go-kart per i ragazzi ai soggetti a dondolo e, per i più piccoli, “Dino il trenino”. Immancabili, poi, i giochi classici per gli spazi aperti: l’altalena, lo scivolo e la teleferica.

Il bar, al centro dell’area giochi, offre panini, stuzzichini e snack per merende e pranzi veloci.

Visita guidata
La visita guidata è gratuita e ha una durata di circa 80 minuti, però si effettua solo su prenotazione per comitive e scolaresche;
accettiamo prenotazioni tutti i giorni feriali e la domenica mattina;
non accettiamo prenotazioni nei giorni di Pasqua, Pasquetta (Lunedì dell’Angelo), 25 aprile, 1 maggio;
la domenica pomeriggio, subito dopo pranzo, viene effettuata una visita guidata con partecipazione libera.

Orari di apertura
– Il Parco è aperto per i singoli visitatori e famiglie dal secondo fine settimana di marzo al secondo di novembre. Per comitive e scolaresche si accettano prenotazioni tutto l’anno;
– nel periodo di apertura, il Parco rimane aperto anche durante le festività civili e religiose (Pasqua, Lunedì dell’Angelo, 25 aprile, 1 maggio, 2 giugno, 15 agosto, 1 novembre);
– il Parco è visitabile ogni giorno dalle ore 9.30 alle ore 19, con l’ultimo ingresso alle ore 18.00;
una parte del percorso è attrezzata per gli ospiti con mobilità ridotta o per le carrozzine.

The structure, which presents reconstructions of dinosaurs, was founded by an artist of the circus, Erardo Ghironi, who decided no longer very young, to retire from the life of tour. The place chosen to ‘stop ‘ was the town of Peccioli where, with the advice of some relatives, Erardo bought two hectares of vineyard and built a house there, for himself and for his two children. With the desire to find a job that could pay for the activities of the itinerant show, Erardo and his sons realized that their land was full of shells, strange footprints, fossil remains: the concrete signs of an ‘evolution of nature from prehistory to today that right there, even on their vineyard, had left traces so evident.
From that discovery came the idea of showing those little treasures of the past, and to accompany them with an itinerary of reconstructions that were both scientifically relevant and effective for teaching, and characterized by evocative style, spectacular and aimed at entertainment that is the distinctive feature of circus activities.
The two brothers, Guido and Paolo Ghironi, decided to invest in this intuition and within a few months they had already built the first five prehistoric animals. It was 1976: the Peccioli Prehistoric Park was born, thirteen years before the book Jurassic Park by Crichton and sixteen years before the homonymous film by Spielberg.
Over the years, the two brothers have refined their technique for the construction of models and today the Park has twenty-two reconstructions, including a nice volcano that erupts colored balls and the reproduction on a natural scale of a brachiosaurus of the Upper Jurassic, the largest dinosaur currently reconstructed in Europe. After more than two years of closure, since the summer of 2018, the Prehistoric Park reopens its gates in the spring of 2019, renovated in style and services.

The Park consists of about three hectares of green with 22 life-size reproductions of dinosaurs. To be precise:

A reptile from the Paleozoic era – lived about 40 million years before the appearance of the dinosaurs;
Eighteen reptiles from the Mesozoic era – commonly called “dinosaurs”;
Three mammals of the Cenozoic era, including a Homo Erectus, of the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods, from 5 million years ago to 11 thousand.

A part of the route is equipped for guests with reduced mobility or for prams.

The entertainment proposal of the Prehistoric Park is completed by an area dedicated to games: from baby go-karts for kids to rocking subjects and, for children, “Dino the train“. The classic games for open spaces are inevitable: the swing, the slide and the cable car.

The bar, in the middle of the playground, offers sandwiches, refreshments and light meal for snacks and quick lunches.

Guided tour
The guided tour is free and has a duration of about 80 minutes, but it is only made by reservation for groups and schools;
we accept bookings every weekday and Sunday morning;
we do not accept reservations on Easter Monday, Easter Monday (Easter Monday), April 25, May 1;
On Sunday afternoon, immediately after lunch, a guided tour with free participation is carried out.

Opening hours
The Park is open to individual visitors and families from the second weekend of March to the second of November. For groups and school groups reservations are accepted all year round;
during the opening period, the Park remains open also during civil and religious holidays (Easter, Easter Monday, April 25, May 1, June 2, August 15, November 1);
the Park can be visited every day from 9.30 to 19, with the last entry at 18.00;
a part of the route is equipped for guests with reduced mobility or for prams.
